It is maintained by the Linux Foundation itself, the home of the kernel. This post is part of our Linux certification series — see also LPIC-1, RHCSA and CompTIA Linux+.

How the exam works

The exam is 100% hands-on (performance-based): 2 hours in a real Linux terminal, taken online with remote proctoring, with no prerequisites. The certification is valid for 3 years. Registration usually includes an official simulator and a second attempt at no charge — check the current terms on the Linux Foundation's page. The exam environment runs a current distribution (currently based on Ubuntu LTS); the concepts, however, apply to any distro.

Exam domains (and their weights)

Operations and deployment (~25%): boot and systemd, managing services and units, cron/timers, packages, kernel and modules, basic virtualization and containers;

Networking (~25%): configuring interfaces and routes, DNS, firewall, port forwarding, NAT, diagnostics with
ss
,
ip
and similar tools;

Storage (~20%): partitioning, LVM, creating/mounting/tuning file systems, swap, quotas, NFS;

Essential commands (~20%): working with files and directories, searching and transforming text (
grep
,
sed
,
awk
), redirection, permissions, compression;

Users and groups (~10%): creating and managing accounts, sudo, profiles, limits, and default permissions.

The weights are those published at the time of publication — check the official page before scheduling, because the Linux Foundation revises the domains periodically.

How to train: speed matters

In LFCS, knowing “what to do” is not enough — you need to execute quickly. Two hours fly by when each task involves creating a logical volume, formatting it, mounting it with a specific option, and making it persistent in
fstab
. Practice complete scenarios against the clock:

# cenário típico: novo disco → LVM → montagem persistente
pvcreate /dev/vdb
vgcreate dados /dev/vdb
lvcreate -L 5G -n web dados
mkfs.xfs /dev/dados/web
echo '/dev/dados/web /var/www xfs defaults 0 2' >> /etc/fstab
mount -a && df -h /var/www

Golden rules: learn to find answers in the
man
pages (you may use system documentation during the exam), create disposable VMs so you can make mistakes without fear, and repeat each scenario until it becomes automatic.

Where to start

The terminal, storage, networking, and systemd foundations tested by LFCS are exactly the path covered by the Linux course by Gabriel (Toca do Tux) — in Portuguese, from scratch to administration, with a two-hour block devoted entirely to partitions and file systems (the domain that trips up the most candidates). After the course, practice timed labs until you are fluent.

If LPIC-1 proves that you know, LFCS proves that you do. Together, the two make an impressive calling card. 🐧

LFCS (Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator) is the certification for people who prefer to prove their skills in practice: no multiple-choice questions — you receive a terminal and a list of real administration tasks to solve against the clock.
