Unlike the previous levels, here you do not earn “the” LPIC-3 — you choose a specialization and become an authority in that domain. Our series covers the entire track: Linux Essentials → LPIC-1 → LPIC-2 → LPIC-3, plus LPI DevOps Tools Engineer.

How it works

The prerequisite is an active LPIC-2. Each specialization requires a single exam (60 questions in 90 minutes, like the other LPI exams) and is valid for 5 years. Available specializations:

LPIC-3 Mixed Environments (300): Linux + Windows integration — Samba in depth, Active Directory, domains, FreeIPA, and centralized authentication in hybrid environments;

LPIC-3 Security (303): cryptography (TLS, GnuPG, disks), access control (SELinux/AppArmor), network and application hardening, intrusion detection, and incident response;

LPIC-3 Virtualization & Containerization (305): KVM/QEMU, libvirt, Xen, containers (Docker, LXC, Podman), orchestration, and the infrastructure that supports the cloud;

LPIC-3 High Availability & Storage Clusters (306): clusters with Pacemaker/Corosync, load balancing, replication (DRBD), distributed storage (Ceph, GlusterFS), and designs with no single point of failure.

Which specialization should you choose?

The right answer is the one your market demands. Do you work at a company with an Active Directory forest and Windows workstations? Mixed Environments. Want to pursue a career in security — the fastest-growing field? Security. Do you make your living with cloud, virtualization, and containers? 305. Do you maintain systems that cannot go down — banking, telecom, healthcare? 306. There is no required order, and nothing prevents you from earning more than one over time.

How to train

At level 3, memorizing commands is not enough: the questions describe architecture and operations scenarios. Your lab needs to simulate the real environment of the specialization — for example, for 305:

# laboratório 305: virtualização aninhada + containers
virsh list --all
virt-install --name vm1 --memory 2048 --disk size=10 --cdrom debian.iso
podman run -d --name web -p 8080:80 nginx
podman generate systemd --new web # container como serviço

Study the official exam objectives on the LPI website (each topic has a weight), read the projects’ official documentation (Samba wiki, SELinux docs, Pacemaker docs — the exams draw directly from them), and rebuild the lab from scratch more than once: at the enterprise level, fluency comes from repeating complete architectures, not isolated commands.

Where to start

If you have made it this far, your foundation is already solid — but if you are planning the track from the beginning, the path is: fundamentals with Linux course by Gabriel (Toca do Tux), then LPIC-1, LPIC-2 and then the specialization that matches your career. LPIC-3 is a marathon, not a 100-meter sprint — and that is exactly why it sets you apart. 🐧

LPIC-3 is the top tier of the Linux Professional Institute certification track: the enterprise level, for people who design and maintain large-scale Linux environments.
