ISPConfig on Debian

Mascote do LinuxPro diante do painel do ISPConfig com os ícones de sites, e-mail, banco e DNS, ao lado de um servidor com a espiral do Debian

Note (2026): The original post (and gist) covered Debian 8 + ISPConfig 3.1. The video below shows installation on Debian 9. Today's official path is the autoinstaller on Debian 12/13: https://get.ispconfig.org. ISPConfig 3.3.1p1 (March 2026) is the stable release. PHP 8 via sury.

ISPConfig 3 is the free hosting control panel: websites, email, DNS, FTP, databases, and multiple servers from a single panel. The lengthy Perfect Server installation became an official script. A fresh VPS, FQDN hostname, root — not a gist from 2017.

Video: Installing Debian 9 with ISPConfig3 (LinuxPro channel). It serves as a tour of the panel. The packages on screen are Debian 9; the commands below are the 2026 install.

What the autoinstaller installs

Debian 12 (Bookworm) or 13 (Trixie), Ubuntu 22.04/24.04. Typical package set: Apache (or Nginx), PHP 8.x via sury (you can request 5.6–8.3), MariaDB, Postfix, Dovecot, Rspamd, BIND, Pure-FTPd, Roundcube, phpMyAdmin. Panel at https://SEU_IP:8080.

Requires a clean machine. The script rewrites Apache, Postfix, and Dovecot. Do not run it over an existing production server.

hostnamectl hostname server1.exemplo.com
apt update && apt upgrade -y
wget -O - https://get.ispconfig.org | sh -s -- --help

Read the --help before piping again. Apache + passive FTP + unattended-upgrades installation:

wget -O - https://get.ispconfig.org | sh -s -- --use-ftp-ports=40110-40210 --unattended-upgrades

Nginx instead of Apache: add --use-nginx. The stable channel is the default; --channel=dev is git, do not use it in production.

At the end, the installer prints the admin and MySQL root passwords. Copy them. Delete the logs in /tmp/ispconfig-ai/var/log/setup-* — they contain plaintext passwords.

After installation

  • Panel: https://server1.exemplo.com:8080 (or the IP). User admin.
  • Update: ispconfig_update.sh (or the 3.3.1p1 tarball + php -q update.php).
  • SSH with keys, not passwords: the how-to Passwordless SSH.
  • Postfix/Dovecot configured by the panel: The history of Postfix.
