What’s coming in version 21.1

Blackmagic announces more than 100 new tools and controls in 21.1. Among the changes announced are enhanced still image/photo capabilities and AI integration via MCP. The full list varies by edition and platform; therefore, for planning an update in production, the reference should always be the official 21.1 release notes, not just third-party summaries.

MCP: where AI agents come in

MCP is a protocol that allows an AI assistant to talk to external tools through a defined interface. In the case of Resolve 21.1, Blackmagic provides a native MCP server: instead of the agent relying on simulated clicks, it can receive context and execute operations exposed by the application.

This doesn't turn AI into a reliable autonomous operator. The available actions depend on the installation, version documentation, and the MCP client used. Treat the agent as an assistant: scope the project, request one action at a time, check the timeline, media, and metadata before saving, and don't give it the only copy of client work.

DaVinci Resolve is officially offered for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Platform choice isn't just preference: GPU, driver, codec, capture card, and control panel can change what works in your environment. DaVinci before Blackmagic

The DaVinci name was born in post-production long before the current Resolve. Blackmagic itself describes DaVinci as the color correction standard since 1984. In September 2009, Blackmagic Design acquired the assets of DaVinci Systems and began developing Resolve within an ecosystem that brings together editing, color, visual effects, and audio.

This origin explains the software's identity: it didn't start as a clip editor to which color correction was attached; professional color was one of the foundations on which other pages and tools were built.

Versions and what can be called a roadmap

  • 1984: DaVinci becomes associated with color correction for post-production.
  • 2009: Blackmagic Design announces the acquisition of DaVinci Systems' assets.
  • 2026: Resolve 21.1 adds, among other new features, the native MCP server announced by Blackmagic.

There is no detailed public roadmap for Resolve that allows stating future dates or features with certainty. The responsible path is to separate what has already been released — like the items documented in 21.1 — from expectations. Follow the release notes and Blackmagic announcements; don't base a purchase on a feature that hasn't been officially announced yet.

Before updating an editing workstation

  • Back up your projects, library, and relevant configuration files.
  • Test media, codecs, plugins, GPU, and rendering on a copy of your work.
  • Keep the previous version registered so you can revert if a plugin or driver fails.
  • When testing AI via MCP, start with reversible operations and review the project before delivery.
